Your first two weeks after top surgery

A realistic account rather than a reassuring one

Your first two weeks after top surgery

You will not be in agony. You will be tight, tired, and surprised by how much energy it takes to do nothing at all.

Day one

You wake in recovery with the medical compression vest already fitted. Most people describe it as being firmly hugged by someone who will not let go. It stays on for thirty days. One night of observation, and we get you walking to the bathroom the same evening.

Days two and three

Usually the low point, which catches people out. Swelling peaks at around forty-eight hours. Sleep propped up on two or three pillows.

Week two

The shape starts to appear from under the swelling, and almost everyone has a wobble about it. Chests look uneven and strange at this stage. That is normal, and it is not the result.

When to call us

Fever above 38°C, sudden one-sided swelling, spreading redness, discharge with an odour, or a graft that turns dark and stays dark. None are common; all are easier dealt with early.
