Life after binding: the first month
The strange lightness nobody prepares you for
Breathing differently, the strange lightness, posture changes and the moment you catch yourself in a mirror and stop bracing.
Your ribs will move again
Years of binding restrict the lower ribs. Once the vest comes off at thirty days, most people notice they can take a full breath for the first time in a long while. It can feel alarming before it feels good.
Posture
Shoulders that have been rolled forward protectively take a few months to unlearn it. Gentle stretching helps; do not force it while you are still healing.
The mirror
Patients tell us the moment that lands is rarely the first dressing change. It is usually something ordinary — a t-shirt, a seatbelt, catching your reflection in a shop window.
