The handful of things that measurably affect wound healing

Eating and drinking for better healing

Nothing faddish here — just the handful of things that measurably affect how a wound closes.

Protein

Wound healing is protein-expensive. Aim for a portion at every meal for the first six weeks. This is the one that matters most.

Iron

Worth checking before surgery, especially if you menstruate. Low iron slows healing and makes the first week feel much worse.

Hydration

Boring and genuinely important, particularly on the flight and in the first forty-eight hours.

Alcohol

None for two weeks. It thins the blood, worsens swelling and interacts with pain medication.
